Home Care Equipment Program

Established in 1974, Manitoba Home Care service is the longest standing comprehensive service of its kind in Canada. Manitoban’s eligible for home care services receive the necessary medical supplies and equipment to support their care plan wherever they may reside within the Province. The Manitoba Home Care Program is a community-based program that provides home support to individuals, regardless of age, who require health services or assistance with activities of daily living. Home Care works with individuals and provides assistance to help them stay in their homes for as long as is safely possible.

In 1997, Manitoba Health and MDA amalgamated warehouse functions and the Agency was made responsible for the Manitoba Home Care Equipment and Supplies Program. MDA continues to be responsible for the Provincial Home Care Equipment Program and liaises closely with the RHA’s to ensure that Program services offered remain current, cost effective and efficient. MDA developed a province wide logistics network and utilizes the most cost effective delivery options offered by Canada Post, Purolator, air carriers and contracted couriers; this translates into increased savings. Many delivery and shipping options are available to clients including rush, overnight and air service. It is important to note that the equipment is fully or partially assembled before it leaves the MDA warehouse. Set-up instructions are included to complete assembly in the home. Set up instructions are available on MDA’s website.

MDA has a Medical Device License and a Drug Establishment License through Health Canada and is a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certified facility. Specialized MDA medical technicians assemble, service and maintain the equipment provided for the Home Care Program. When equipment is not functioning properly in the field, MDA will exchange the equipment at MDA’s cost. The service, maintenance and exchange of equipment are included in the monthly rental rates. MDA coordinates with the client for pickup when a client no longer requires the equipment. MDA provides after hours emergency service and medical technicians are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
